Taking payments as a software developer in Sri Lanka

A guide by AppKade · Facts checked

For an Android app, Google Play's own billing pays Sri Lankan developers in US dollars. For a website or web app, a Sri Lankan payment gateway such as PayHere takes card and local payments in rupees, but it needs a registered business and a business bank account. Stripe does not list Sri Lanka as a supported country at the time of writing.

Paid apps and in-app purchases on Google Play

If your app is on Google Play, the simplest way to charge is Google Play's billing. Sri Lanka is on Google's list of countries where developers can register as a merchant, so you can sell paid apps, subscriptions and in-app purchases, and Google pays out in US dollars.

Payments on your own website

For a web app or software you sell from your own site, you need a payment gateway. PayHere is one of the Sri Lankan gateways. To open a PayHere business account you need a business registered in Sri Lanka and a business bank account in rupees in the business's name. PayHere offers a sandbox account for testing before you go live.

Stripe is the usual choice for developers abroad, but its list of supported countries does not include Sri Lanka at the time of writing. Guides that suggest it usually mean registering a company in another country, which brings its own tax and banking duties.

  • Compare the fees yourself. Gateways charge a fee on each payment. Ask each one for its current rates for local and foreign cards before you choose.

  • Show prices in rupees. Buyers in Sri Lanka compare in LKR. On AppKade you can give a starting price, such as "From LKR 2,500 / month".

Registering a business first

Most gateways, and an organisation account on Google Play, need a registered business. The two common forms are a sole proprietorship and a private limited company.

  • Sole proprietorship. Registered in person at your Divisional Secretariat. It is the quickest form for one person trading under a business name.

  • Private limited company. Registered with the Registrar of Companies, online through its eROC service. It separates the business from you, and some buyers and gateways prefer it.

  • Get advice for your case. Tax registration, the business bank account and invoicing rules depend on your situation. An accountant can tell you which form suits you.
