Overview

Wi-Fi signal meter for finding dead spots and crowded channels in homes, offices and shops.

Alpha NetScope is a free Wi-Fi signal meter for Android, made in Sri Lanka by bever splinter.

Alpha NetScope is a Wi-Fi signal meter for Android. It shows the signal strength of the network you are connected to, updated every second, so you can walk through a building and see exactly where coverage drops.

What it does:

  • Live signal reading in dBm with a plain rating from Excellent to Dead, plus your link speed, Wi-Fi standard and channel width.
  • Session minimum, average and maximum, so you can compare one room against another instead of judging from a single reading.
  • A three-minute chart of signal over time, drawn as a continuous line for the connected network and for any nearby networks you select.
  • A list of nearby access points per band (2.4, 5 and 6 GHz) showing channel, channel width, Wi-Fi standard, security and BSSID.
  • A channel usage graph showing which channels the networks around you sit on and how much they overlap.
  • Channel advice for the network you are on, including which of channels 1, 6 or 11 is least crowded on 2.4 GHz.

Who it is for: anyone placing a router or access point, fixing a dead spot at home, checking coverage in a shop, office, hostel or classroom, or working out whether a slow connection is a signal problem or something else.

It runs entirely on your device. There is no account, no internet connection required, and no analytics. Wi-Fi readings stay in memory only while the app is open and are never uploaded. The screen stays on while the app is in the foreground so readings keep coming while you walk around.

Requires Android 7.0 or later. Android requires Location permission before any app can scan for nearby Wi-Fi networks; the connected-signal meter works without it.

Questions and answers

Does it work without the internet?

From bever splinter

Yes. Everything runs on the device; no connection or account is needed.

Why does it ask for Location permission?

From bever splinter

Android requires it before any app can list nearby Wi-Fi networks. The connected-signal meter and chart work without granting it.

Is my network data uploaded anywhere?

From bever splinter

No. Readings are kept in memory only while the app is open and are never sent off the device.

Which Android versions are supported?

From bever splinter

Android 7.0 and later.

Is there an iPhone version?

From bever splinter

No, Android only.

Why does the nearby network list update more slowly than the connected signal?

From bever splinter

Android limits apps to a few Wi-Fi scans every couple of minutes, so nearby networks refresh about every 30 seconds while your connected signal updates every second.
